Panama, 1 July 2012.

Dear friends and members of the MSBC:
It is my pleasure to inform you of the advances in the organization of the XVI Congress of the Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation.

Venues: The XVI Congress of the MSBC will be held at the Harmodio Arias Madrid campus of the University of Panama.  This campus is located in an area surrounded by the natural beauty of the Metropolitan Natural Park.  The inauguration will be held in the spectacular “Dome” auditorium, and the closing ceremony will be in the auditorium of the postgraduate building of the Technological University of Panama (UTP, by its initials in Spanish).

Abstracts: The Academic Committee has received 535 abstracts (385 for oral presentations and 150 for posters). The countries that have submitted the largest number of abstracts are: Mexico (229), Panama (83) y Costa Rica (68). Aside from Mesoamerican countries we have also received abstracts from colleagues in Spain, Venezuela, Guyana and Puerto Rico. *Note: if you have not received comments on your abstract or a letter of acceptance, please contact the Academic Committee academico.smbc.2012@gmail.com.

Courses: We have 4 courses confirmed: Bioacoustics (10-15 Sept.) presented by Fernando González y Hector Perdomo, Statistics Applied to Population Monitoring (12-15 Sept.) presented by Viviana Ruiz, Conservation Photography (15 y 16 Sept.) presented by Jerry Bauer and his team, and Impacts of Infrastructure on Wildlife (22 Sept.) presented by Coral Pacheco, Juan de Dios Valdés and Joel Saenz.  Fill in the form and reserve your place by paying 50% to your MSBC country president until 18 August.  Places are limited. *Note: For more information please contact Angel Sosa angelsosa1983@yahoo.com.

Contests: This year we will hold the V Oral Presentation Contest and the X Annual Poster Contest for undergraduate and Master’s students.  The Photography Contest will have 5 categories from which 15 winners will be picked.  *Note: To enter you must be registered for the XVI Congress and personally enter in each contest on 17-18 Sept. Winners must be present at the closing ceremony on Friday 21 Sept.

Symposia: We have 8 Symposia confirmed on themes including Feline, Primate and Psittacid Conservation, Funding for Conservation, Macro-invertebrate, Plants and Fungi Studies, Ecological Restoration, Biological Corridors and the Impact of Infrastructure on Wildlife.  Of these, 3 correspond to Thematic Interest Groups (GIT), namely Psittacid, Corridors and Infrastructure.

Field Trips: Field trips will be held on 20 Sept. And we will visit natural protected areas such as Barro Colorado Island, Metropolitan Natural Park and Soberania National Park, as well as visitor’s centers such as Punta Culebra, Discovery Center and the BioMuseum.  At 5:00pm we will all meet at the Miraflores Locks to learn about the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal. There we will spend the afternoon learning about this great engineering triumph while we enjoy the company of our colleagues and friends. The weekend of 22-23 Sept we will have special guided tours of Barro Colorado Island and the beautiful islands of Kuna Yala on the Caribbean coast. In addition to the amazing scenery, beaches and snorkelling opportunities you will get to learn more about this indigenous group of Eastern Panama and its unique culture.

Certificates: For students enrolled in Panamanian Universities, certificates of participation will be equivalent to 40 hours by the Vice-Rectory of Research and Postgraduate Studies of the University of Panama.

First Carbon Neutral Event: Land Eco Services will be in charge of quantifying the carbon footprint of the event, as well as defining the mitigation measures needed.  We hope to have your support in letting us know as accurately as possible, what methods of transport you used and the distances travelled to get to Panama (this last bit of information is optional).

Discounts: Attendants to the Congress will have a 15% discount on COPA Airlines.  The reservation code is # C3973.  Your final destination must be Panama City, and the dates of your travel must fall between 12 – 26 September 2012 inclusive.
